Naturopathic Medicine

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is an alternative form of health care based on the natural healing power of the body. Naturopathy emphasizes prevention, diagnosis and treatment using natural therapies including clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, massage and physical treatments, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, and lifestyle counselling.  While conventional medicine treats symptoms using pharmaceutical therapies or surgery, Naturopathic Medicine finds and treats the root cause of the disease with the objective of eliminating the problem and preventing recurrence.

The Naturopathic approach to healthcare identifies biochemical and physiological imbalances within the individual, and uses scientifically proven and evidence-based solutions to address these imbalances.  This approach focuses on naturally occurring substances, minimally invasive methods and promotion of a healthy diet and lifestyle.  Naturopathic Medicine treats a wide range of health concerns including serious illnesses and chronic disease, both physical and psychological.

A qualified naturopathic doctor completes a four-year, full-time accredited naturopathic medicine program, after earning an undergraduate degree at university, and graduates as Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND). NDs must write and pass standardized North American board exams known as the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) in order to qualify for regulation/licensing. In Canada, Naturopathic Medicine is currently regulated in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario and all other provinces and territories are actively engaged in seeking regulation.
